CSR's mainline cut through the heart of southwestern Ontario, between Windsor and Fort Erie. In 1904, MCR began a long-term lease of Canada Southern Railway (CSR), which operated the most direct route between Detroit and New York. These trains ranged from locals to the Wolverine. The Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) operated mostly passenger trains between Chicago and Detroit. The completed railroad was 270 miles (430 km) in length. Thus they reached Michigan City, Indiana, by 1850 and finished the line to Kensington, Illinois, (now a south Chicago neighborhood) in 1852, using Illinois Central trackage rights to downtown Chicago. To facilitate this process, they bought the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad in 1851. This involved passing through two other states and getting leave from two state legislatures to do so. Michigan Central train arriving in Kalamazoo, Michigan, 1887 The now state-owned company was renamed the Central Railroad of Michigan. The State of Michigan bailed out the railroad in 1837 by purchasing it and investing $5,000,000. The City of Detroit invested $50,000 in the project. The small private organization quickly ran into problems securing cheap land in the private market, and abandonment of the project was discussed. However, this is not the location of Michigan Central Station, which apparently replaced this building. The railroad actually began construction on May 18, 1836, starting at "King's Corner" in Detroit, which was the name by which the southeast corner of Jefferson and Woodward Avenue was then known. Joseph Railroad was chartered in 1831 with a capital of $1,500,000. Joseph and via boat service on to Chicago. ![]() ![]() They are named after the Spanish Canary Islands and were valued by Spanish and English kings and aristocrats because of the ability of males to sing. The History of the CanaryĬanaries were initially brought to Europe by Spanish sailors and first bred in the 17 th century. They can live 10 to 15 years in captivity and even longer in some situations. Unlike several other species of finch in which males and females look different, male and female society finches look the same. Most are some combination of brown and white. They come in many color variations from all white to nearly all black. As they have been bred domestically for generations, they typically are one of the tamer finch species and may be trained to take food from a hand. ![]() Society finches do not exist naturally in the wild but are a hybrid of two finch species first bred in China and India thousands of years ago. On average, these finches live 8 to 12 years in captivity. ![]() Like most finches, Gouldian finches typically prefer not to be handled but can be quite interactive and respond to the site and sound of their owners. Gentle, calm, and with a relatively quiet song, Gouldian finches should be kept in pairs or groups. Gouldian finches are brightly colored, with the male exhibiting brilliant purple, yellow, green and turquoise feather patches that they use in an elaborate courtship display along with a complicated song pattern to attract the less colorful females. These finches are excellent choices for owners concerned about noise and limited space and typically live on average seven to ten years. Many of these birds recognize their owners’ faces and voices and respond with happy chirps and peeps. Usually friendly with other birds, zebra finches can sometimes act bold and dominant. They have black and white stripes over their chests – hence their name, “zebra.” Zebra finches are very social and typically do better when housed in pairs. Zebra finches originate from the wild grasslands of Australia. Finches come in a variety of colors and feather patterns, with perhaps the most common pet finches being the zebra finch, Gouldian finch, and society finch. Finches kept as pets are more often of the Family Estrildidae – the waxbills, weavers and sparrows. Within the group that makes up finches, there are several families of birds that comprise more than 140 species that are found in nearly every continent. When given a large enough cage to jump and flutter around in, access to sunlight, and proper nutrition, these birds can make excellent family pets. Many of them, in fact, live happily with similar species in large enough cages and are shy about being handled. They can make wonderful companions for families with children, as they don’t typically require the extensive handling and out-of-cage time that parrots require to live happily, and they don’t inflict the painful damaging bite that parrots can. The identifying feature of this group compared with other birds is the arrangement of their toes, with three pointing forward and one back, to facilitate perching.īoth canaries and finches have been domesticated as pets for hundreds of years. ![]() Canaries and finches belong to the order of birds called passerines that includes thousands of different species, including wild songbirds. If you are looking for relatively quiet, fairly easy to care for bird that is beautiful to watch and may even sing, you should consider a canary or a finch. By Laurie Hess, DVM, Dipl ABVP (Avian Practice) ![]() ![]() ![]() Generally, symptoms are disruptive and uncomfortable, but the arrhythmia is typically not dangerous. This can happen to anyone, but the risk factors depend on the specific type of tachycardia. ![]() This occurs when electricity from the top of the heart misbehaves. This is absolutely normal behavior, and is not an arrhythmia. It happens when the SA node sends out electrical signals too quickly. This is generally caused by things like stress, anxiety, fever, or strenuous exercise. ![]() ![]() A heart rate over 100 beats per minute is technically referred to as “tachycardia”, but really, an increase from your normal heart rate, particularly associated with symptoms, may indicate an arrhythmia. Heart rates can differ depending on your age and overall health. However, they can cause symptoms, or when you have a lot of them, can even cause reversible damage to your heart – so they should not be ignored, and expert consultation should be sought. Like other fleeting palpitations mentioned above, they usually aren’t cause for alarm. PVCs happen when the bottom of your heart has an early beat. Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) I advise patients with these kinds of irregular heartbeats to see their doctor on a regular basis, in case their condition needs to be treated. Some other kinds of arrhythmias should be monitored more closely. That is part of caring for you as your doctor. Chances are, your fleeting palpitations are normal, and you might gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing that. The bottom line is this: If you have any palpitations that concern you, let your doctor know. Any symptom of an arrhythmia in a person with a known heart problem.Palpitations or other arrhythmia symptoms that occur often or last longer than a few seconds. It can be the result of something as simple as drinking too much coffee or feeling stressed or anxious, or with no behavioral explanation at all – it just happened.īut signs or symptoms that might need to be evaluated and monitored by a physician include: These “butterflies” are usually nothing to worry about when they happen now and then, and usually last a few seconds at most. Your heart “skipping a beat.” We’ve all had the feeling that our heart skipped a beat. I generally break them down into three categories: 1. Which arrhythmias require medical attention?Īs I mentioned before, there are different types of arrhythmias, and not all of them require a doctor’s care. Risk factors for arrhythmias depend on the type of arrhythmia but may include aging, having high blood pressure, being overweight, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, having other diseases or conditions that weaken the heart, or a family history of arrhythmia. In my practice, I see patients of all ages with arrhythmias - from teens to people in their 100s. In some cases, people are born with heart defects that may show up as arrhythmias. Their arrhythmias may have been found incidentally during testing for other medical conditions. However, some of my patients with arrhythmias have few or no symptoms. A pounding or fluttering sensation in their chest (known as palpitations). Many experience some of the following symptoms: When this impulse misbehaves or is disrupted, it can cause an arrhythmia, which affects how well your heart pumps blood to your body. This node is sometimes called the heart’s natural pacemaker. The electrical impulse that “kick-starts” each heartbeat comes from the sinoatrial (SA) node. What is a heart arrhythmia?Ī heart arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm. I think it’s helpful to first understand the basics of arrhythmias. While that was an extreme arrhythmia case, I tell my patients it’s important to have some insight into which arrhythmias are nothing to worry about, versus those that might need treatment or close monitoring. Thankfully, Eriksen’s life was saved, and he ultimately received the care he needed, including a surgical placement of a cardiac defibrillator, to help manage his condition. Others can be serious or potentially life-threatening if left untreated, as was the case with Danish soccer player Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest on the field during a match in the summer of 2021. Some kinds of heart arrhythmias are harmless. As a cardiac electrophysiologist - a physician who deals with the electrical system that controls the heart’s rhythm - I work with a lot of patients who are experiencing irregular heartbeats, also called heart arrhythmias. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Therefore, it is not surprising that this functionality performs extremely well for both solutions, without time lag or display issues. In my experience, again, there are five categories of auras that are in a special vibration field of their own and whose bases are compatible with each other. A lot of people people have a second speck of colour added to their aura, which adds a bit more change and diversity to the person’s aura, but the main one is what matters most. All colours have variations in depth, intensity and tone - which distinguishes them all too and makes certain characteristics in their character/nature too from light to darkest (weaker - stronger - intense traits). The biggest variation and difference between same types is extroversion and introversion. Throughout many years of observing and experiencing these auras, I’ve reached conclusions of my own and separated aura colours into categories. PS.: I don’t believe your aura colour defines your personality, it just describes the essence of your nature and what kind of person you are (in my opinion). Children usually have “rainbow” auras in my experience, but all develop their stable colour after reaching certain maturity or developing a defined personality. Now, these descriptions are only about the aura layer that describes your essence and nature, that usually becomes defined after childhood (or much earlier for some stronger characters), not the emotional/mental one that is forever changing (which people usually talk about and confuse with the stable layer). As someone who has observed and studied auras for 10 years, I hope this is helpful to some that might be interested in this! English is not my first language, pardon any mistakes. Hey all! Most OS's have a way to read what another process is doing as part of the debug functionality (if you run the "debugger" in your system, it will of course run as a separate process, but needs to be able to access your program when you debug it, so there needs to be ways to read the memory of that process), but that requires a little more effort than just calling new or malloc (and you either will need to have extra permissions (superuser, adminstrator, etc), or be the owner of the other process too).
